Those with MS and the people whose lives they touch will find this book helpful in understanding the wide ranging affects with a firsthand look at what it is like to live day after day, year after year with the disease. Written by a woman who is still walking after more than 40 years, the author paints a full and encouraging picture of how it is possible to have a satisfying life despite illness. Kathleen Scully Aquilino experienced the first symptom while in college but was not officially diagnosed until she was 44. Through the growing number of ailments and afflictions her mysterious disease brought, she kept going. Working, Marrying. Making a home. Adopting and raising a daughter. The delay in diagnosis actually did a great deal to help her stay positive and active. There are some lessons here in the power of expectations.

Hers was the alternative path, relying only when necessary on physicians and pharmaceuticals, depending more on less traditional forms of treatment such as chiropractic, acupuncture, and breast milk. That’s right—milk from nursing mothers! She will share whatever knowledge she's accumulated during four decades of struggle. The decisions she has made may inform others who are faced with crushing losses, pernicious diseases, and disagreeable doctors.

I couldn't put this book down! Kathleen's life story is amazing! There are things in this book that everyone can relate to because of the honesty with which the author told her story. While it will definitely be helpful reading for anyone with MS or any other chronic illness, the book also speaks to the human condition. The author's spirit, grit and sense of humor shine through and although her challenges are many, the book, when all is said and done, is very uplifting!

Muddling Through MS 40 Years Doing It My Way edition by Kathleen Scully Aquilino Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

A candid and charming peek inside the ups and (many) downs of this unsinkable optimist's journey. Simultaneously heartbreaking and uplifting, this collection allows the reader into the often confusing world of an MS-diagnosed individual. Thank you.
Excellent Book!!!
MS is like a fingerprint. Each person manifests the illness in different ways. What can be shared is a winning attitude to cope with the inevitable ups and downs of the illness. Kate Scully Aquilino’s book is a demonstration of how one can still create a loving and meaningful life despite the challenges of MS.
Being one of the appraisers referred to in her email book, I was astonished to learn about her lifelong ordeal and her spirit fighting this neurolgical disorder. I had no knowledge that her personal life had been and continues to be so difficult. Kate was a competent and skillful appraiser. She is an inspiration to me, and I hope will aide others who have MS and read about her struggles and her life story. Kate's experiences with Doctors and personal life has given me a much greater understanding of the difficulties living with MS.
As a fellow MSer, Kathleen is spot on with her assessments of this very individualized disease. Her faith and outwardly love for God is what makes this book real. No hidden agenda, just simple trust and following of his will. Pure honesty. Definitely something I needed to read especially during my pitty party days.
This extraordinary book is not just for those with MS - although I can imagine how much it could help - but for all of us trying to deal with what life sends us. There's no self-pity here, but there's plenty of clarity, compassion, humor, determination, and just plain good writing, both practical and inspirational. I will never think of illness, either in myself or in others, in the same way again. "Muddling Through MS" is a splendid and valuable accomplishment. I can't recommend it too much.
"Life changes in the instant. The ordinary instant."
-Joan Didion

Kate Scully Aquilino’s compelling memoir is filled with unexpected moments of joy and sorrow, fear and courage, disappointment and triumph, but always tempered by hope and faith.
This book is a must-read for anyone who had been diagnosed with MS or any other chronic illness, as well as their caregivers. Kate has the unique ability to engage the reader with her unique style of writing, which is a little bit of bitter and a lot of being grateful for life’s sweetness. It will bring you to tears just as easily as it will make you laugh out loud.
The reader will also discover this is a love story; one man has been by Kate’s side through it all. It is a tribute to marriage vows taken seriously and a testament to the power of abiding love and friendship.
Kate’s story takes the reader through the labyrinth of the health care system starting with a long-delayed diagnosis through various and numerous treatments and finally, her self-designed plan for those things that make her feel better, with a little help from friends.

I highly recommend this book.
